Al Qishlah Palace is a heritage site in Hail, in the northwest of Saudi Arabia. It was built as a military barracks and defensive base, and visitors come to walk through a large building that shows how traditional Najdi architecture was used for a practical, defensive purpose.
The site is open from 08:00 to 17:00, and there is no minimum age, so families can visit together. Inside, you can explore a wide central courtyard that was once used for drills and parades, framed by shaded arcades roofed with palm fronds and athl trunks. Around it are rooms that served as offices, storage and living quarters, along with eight large halls and a rectangular mosque held up by stone columns. Eight cylindrical towers stand along the walls, and the walls themselves are made of mud and stone, with gypsum decoration in geometric and floral patterns. Exhibitions, festivals and events are held here as part of Hail Season.
King Abdulaziz Al Saud commissioned the palace in 1941 (1360 AH), and it was finished in just over a year. Its layout runs east to west, with the main gate on the eastern side and a second gate on the south. The building reflects Hail's role as both a military stronghold and an administrative centre. In 2017 it was included in the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Program for the Care of Cultural Heritage, which supports its preservation.
