A'arif Fort is a historic fortress on a hilltop in Hail, in northern Saudi Arabia. People come to walk through one of the city's oldest surviving monuments and to look out over Hail and the desert plains around it from the height of the hill.
The fort is built of stone and mud, with large wooden gates and a ring of defensive towers. Inside you can see the main watchtower, a small mosque, two rooms and open courtyards, all laid out in the Najdi style. It has been restored and now works as an archaeological museum and cultural attraction. It is open from 08:00 to 17:00, and there is no minimum age, so families can visit together.
A'arif Fort was raised as a military stronghold to guard the southern edge of Hail and to keep watch for threats. It was the first of seven forts built to protect the city. Over time it also gave a welcome to pilgrims and caravans, which made it a meeting point as well as a defence. The fort also had a part in community life: the Ramadan cannon was fired from here at sunset, and it was a place for sighting the moon. A visit gives a clear sense of how Hail was defended and how its people marked the rhythm of the year.
