Al Qarah Mountain
Al Qarah Mountain in Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, is a sandstone landmark of 28 narrow caves where the air stays cool and local potters still work. Open 08:00 to 23:00.
Al Qarah Mountain is a cave-filled landmark in Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, where visitors come to leave the desert glare behind and walk through naturally cool rock passages. It stands in the heart of the Al-Ahsa Oasis, a UNESCO site, and appeals to travellers who like their scenery and their history in the same place.
The mountain holds 28 tall, narrow caverns spread along more than 1.5 kilometres. Al Nashab is known for holding steady temperatures through the year, and other caves worth asking about include Bu Saleh, Al Eid, An Naqa, Al Mua'adhamah and Al Maheub. Some caves are used as pottery workshops, so you can watch local artisans at work. Guided tours and interpretive experiences are available. The site is open from 08:00 to 23:00, and there is no minimum age, so families can bring young children along.
The mountain rises out of the Al Ahsa landscape and looks quite unlike the desert around it, with sandstone pillars and winding passageways. Its shaded interiors offer a comfortable place to pause even in summer. Together with the craftspeople who keep traditional pottery going inside the rock, this makes the mountain a place where the land and the local way of life are easy to see side by side.
