Visitor Center Al-ukhdood Archaeological
A museum-style visitor centre inside the ancient Al-Ukhdood site in Najran, tracing the region's story from prehistoric times to the Islamic period. Open six days a week, with all ages welcome.
The Al-Ukhdood Archaeological Site Visitor Center stands inside the ancient site of Al-Ukhdood in Najran, Saudi Arabia. It gives visitors a museum-style introduction to the ruins around it. The building covers about 300 square metres and pairs modern design with materials chosen to echo the surrounding landscape.
Inside, the halls follow Najran's story from prehistoric times to the Islamic period, drawing on ancient writings and travellers' accounts. Interactive displays and models explain the region's architecture and landmarks, and there are sections on local folklore and traditional crafts. Outside, you can see what remains of around 25 stone and mud-brick buildings, where foundations and some walls still stand 3 to 4 metres high, along with large millstones once used to grind grain. The kasbah, or fortress, is among the most prominent features. The centre opens Saturday to Thursday from 10:00 to 18:00, and on Friday from 13:00 to 18:00. There is no minimum age.
Najran was the capital of an ancient Arab kingdom and an important stop on the old pilgrimage route. Al-Ukhdood is also mentioned in the Quran, and excavations have uncovered city walls, houses, tombs and thousands of inscriptions that record a tragic episode of persecution. The centre helps place these finds in context.
