Al Naslaa Rock
Al Naslaa Rock is a conical rock formation at Uyun Al Jawa in Qassim, with ancient carvings and inscriptions on its surface. It suits a quiet visit for anyone drawn to history, nature or photography.
Al Naslaa Rock is a large rock formation at Uyun Al Jawa in Saudi Arabia's Qassim Region, standing alone in open desert. People come to see its unusual shape, the split that divides it, and the old carvings that cover its surface. It is a calm place that rewards a slow walk.
The site is open from 08:00 to 18:00, and there is no minimum age, so families can come with children of any age. Walk around the formation to take in its form and the natural split, then look closely at the Thamudic inscriptions and the carved animal figures. Some of the writing is dated to between the 2nd century BCE and the 1st or 2nd century CE. The wide views and quiet make it a good stop for photographers.
The rock was shaped over a very long time by weathering and wind. Its name comes from the Arabic word nasalat, meaning "to separate", a nod to how it stands apart from the mountains nearby. The carvings suggest travellers and caravans once used it as a landmark and a place to pass through. Local stories also link it to the poet-warrior Antarah ibn Shaddad, said to have tied his horse here and met Abla. These tales belong to oral tradition, but they add a human thread to the place.
